Medical Management of Rhinoplasty Patients

Chronic nasal disease is very common

Nearly one third of all human beings experience long-term nasal symptoms such as a blocked or obstructed nose, post-nasal drip, and poor sense of smell. These symptoms have a very significant impact on a patient’s sense of quality of life. As nasal trauma resulting in external deformity or developmental anomalies are also very common, many rhinoplasty patients present to Dr Palma with a mixture of medical and surgical problems.

From a sense of desperation, many patients will have already tried seeing their family practitioners, and used several over-the-counter medications, often with highly disappointing results.

Dr. Palma has over 25 years of experience in nasal diseases, whether medical, surgical, or a combination of both. He will take your history, examine your nose, both externally and with an endoscope, before he can make recommendations for further medical or surgical care.

Medical and surgical treatment of common nasal symptoms

Most nasal symptoms that result from rhinitis, or an inflamed nose, cannot be completely abolished; however, they can be greatly improved through diligent use of correct medication, and sometimes surgery. At times, Dr. Palma will also require adjunctive investigations, such as CT scans, blood tests, and opinions from allied specialists.

It is vital to remember that many over-the-counter medications are only meant to be used for a few days. Long-term use of such medication can have permanent side effects. Dr. Palma will advise you on which medicines are safe to use on a long-term basis.

Non-medical management such as daily nasal douching with saline is both safe, and provides relief from many nasal symptoms. Dr Palma may ask you to use saline douching both before and after a rhinoplasty as it can be a significant factor in restoring normal nasal physiology.

Side effects and contraindications of rhinitis medical treatment

The treatment of rhinitis may have to be temporarily interrupted due to rhinoplasty and re-assessed following a period of observation. In general, rhinoplasty cannot cure all the symptoms of rhinitis, however, it can make the delivery of medicine to the desired parts of the nose more efficient.

On rare occasions, medical treatment of rhinitis may lead to side effects such as nose-bleeds, or its use can be contraindicated. Dr Palma will provide you with reliable information on when these medicines should not be used.
